Evolving the way we operate our transmission network

The Next Generation Network Operations (NGNO) Project is evolving the way we operate our network, improving Queensland's transmission network performance to better adapt to changes in the energy environment.

Through cutting-edge technologies, NGNO is revolutionising the way we work, automating routines and breaking new ground in network operations. Its reach spans every corner of Powerlink - from the customer experience to the behind-the-scenes systems that keep our network running smoothly.

Every team, and every individual, plays a vital role in its success and we need you to come and be part of it. Change on this scale doesn’t come along every day. If you’re passionate about shaping the future of energy in Queensland, this is your opportunity to make a real, lasting impact for generations to come.

“If you come and work on this project and learn how the new energy management system works, you’ll be one of the subject matter experts of the future. It’s not just a job. You’ve got a real stake in the future here. It doesn’t stop when we go live, either. It’s just the beginning.”

Project overview

The NGNO portfolio consists of three programs:

The Powerlink Energy Management System is the principal technology platform for the safe and efficient real-time operation of the transmission network. The replacement of the Energy Management System is a critical step in meeting the challenges of the changing electricity environment.

The AEMS will surpass our current systems, offering cutting-edge features that will transform how we operate our network.

The AEMS Program will deliver:

  • a new Advanced Energy Management System with contemporary functionality to control and operate the network
  • new capabilities to forecast and predict network contingencies
  • enhanced end-to-end visibility of operational network information
  • reduction in manual data entry across systems.

The Enabling Software Program will focus on improved operational network performance including the introduction of new tools, process, and enhanced collaboration between teams to:

  • manage and investigate network incidents delivering an enterprise-wide view of current and emerging incidents
  • schedule and manage planned network outages using intuitive network models
  • new essential interfaces between AEMS and SCADA master data
  • automated data controls reducing manual data entry across systems.

The Foundations Program will deliver the pre-requisite infrastructure and work environments:

  • provide collaborative, ergonomic, and safe workspaces that prioritize employee well-being
  • establish a dedicated Test Lab for evaluating new operational technologies and an AEMS Training Facility
  • enhance business continuity sites to improve network resilience and reduce operational risks.
