Overview

The Redbank Plains Substation, located approximately 27km south-west of Brisbane, was established in 1985 and supplies electricity to Energex’s local distribution network.

It also provides additional switching capability for alternative power transfer between Blackstone and Goodna.

There is a long-term requirement to continue to supply the existing electricity services provided by the Redbank Plains Substation.

Both power transformers, along with a range of ageing equipment in the substation are nearing the end of their technical service life and require replacement to maintain the ongoing safe, reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity into the future.

Status

Powerlink will be undertaking construction works at Powerlink’s existing substation at Redbank Plains to install essential new equipment on-site.

To minimise impacts on our customers and ensure electricity supply remains unaffected during the project, construction works will be conducted over two stages.

  • Stage one will commence in February 2025 and is expected to be completed in November 2025.
  • Stage two will start in March 2026 and is scheduled for completion in October 2026.

Timing for both stages is weather dependant and all works will take place on Powerlink-owned land, with minimal disruption to nearby local residents.

Each stage will involve refurbishing the existing transformers, removing ageing switch gear and installing new equipment, and replacing all primary bays in the substation including foundations and structures.

All works will be undertaken within the existing substation footprint.

Local residents may notice an increase in traffic as vehicles access the site during peak construction periods.

Our construction vehicles will access the substation via Mullins Street.

Traffic management plans will be in place to help minimise any potential interruption.

We are mindful of the residential nature of this substation’s location and will take all reasonable and practical measures to minimise impacts to local traffic.

Our working hours are typically between 7am and 4pm, Monday to Saturday (not including public holidays).

On several occasions Powerlink will need to conduct work outside of our standard working hours to fill the transformers with insulant which is required for their continued safe and effective operation.

We will provide local residents with advance notice prior to these works taking place.
